And changing it so that it will only retroactively mark it as read once the user view the page is not something practical in this scenario (there are a lot more ways in which that can break down, and for almost every case it is over-engineering).

Dec 1, 2022 at 17:28 comment added user152859 The code handling marking the item as read can't know that you changed your mind and didn't actually navigate to the link. Maybe with some complex hax it's possible to know, but I don't think the devs should spend their time on it.
