Is it more useful for StackOverflowStack Overflow to provide a third place, or more useful to provide easy access to existing third places? What if profiles were augmented to provide places to enter XMPPXMPP IDs, user names on devdeveloper sites such as githubGitHub, bitbucketBitbucket, and OhlohOhloh, IRC screen names, etc., with everything hyperlinked as appropriate?

If a real-time chat solution is added, however, it would be nice to be able to connect to it via either IRC or XMPP conferencing as well as the Web. I don't know if Campfire supports such a thing, but there shouldn't be any insurmountable technical hurdles to the concept.
