AvX And Why I’m Team X-Men

Cross-posted from Ars Marginal:

Hat tip to the crew on my comic book email list for inspiring this post.

As many of you are aware, Marvel’s latest major company event is here: AvX also known as Avengers vs.X-Men.

Given Marvel’s track record, I expect this story arc to go straight to hell in second to last issue if not the final installment. Because that’s just how Marvel rolls. The fact is that The House of Ideas does indeed come up with some excellent concepts. However Marvel will consistently sabotage their own stories to maintain the status quo if said storytelling will result in character development or changing the landscape of the universe such as protagonists being unheroic or venturing the universe into unfamiliar territory.

Examples include but not limited to: Hulk being shipped off to another planet by his friends and their ship accidently murdering his wife. And while his comrades had a legit reason for their dubious actions, rather than explore their corruption, it deus ex machina’ed that some random alien sabotaged the ship and thus all the Marvel “heroes” are still good. Scarlet Witch murdering three Avengers and wiping out mutants, only it wasn’t her fault, a bad force made her do it. Tony Stark violating the Civil Rights of metahumans (yes I know that’s a DC term but roll with me here) and minorities only he gets amnesia and doesn’t remember his crimes. To be fair the last one was probably the best play Marvel could’ve made because even now I still can’t look at Stark as anything other than a racist Nazi fascist (read Adam: Legend of the Blue Marvel to see Stark’s racism at play).

The point is Marvel sabotages its great ideas maintain the status quo and maintain one dimensional characters: House of M, Civil War, World War Hulk, Children’s Crusade, Doomwar, etc. and so forth.

So even with Brian Michael Bendis at the helm (whom I’m personally a fan of) I’m expecting the same fail with this event given Marvel’s editorial mandates and their track record.

Moving on.

After reading issue one of AvX, there was an interesting gem that I took note of. Captain America comes to Utopia to take Hope into custody because the Phoenix Force has returned and currently resides within her. Cyclops of course isn’t having it. Hence the confrontation. And in the midst of the confrontation a very powerful truth is revealed:

First of all the Avengers are in no position to pass judgment on what X-Men should and should not do. Let’s not forget that Nazi Stark launched Civil War on the Marvel heroes (yet if he used half of those resources to track down actual villains then vigilantes would be irrelevant) and let’s not forget that Sentry and Scarlet Witch went rogue on the Avengers watch.

I don’t blame Scott for wanting to keep the Phoenix Force as far away from them as possible.

Secondly, as a minority comic book reader, this is something I’ve pondered on for years. As we all know, X-Men is an allegory to the plight of blacks and the Civil Rights movement. With all of the oppression that mutants face, why hasn’t Captain America, the Avengers, the Fantastic Four spoken out or did anything to defend mutant rights?

Scott is right, the only time Avengers or the other superheroes acknowledge the X-Men’s existence is when they want something. POCs, that sound familiar?

Clearly Stark won’t stand for minorities because he’s a racist Nazi fuck as proven in  but what about the rest of them. Captain America publicly speaking out on behalf of mutants could make an impact. Hell the same could be said for people of color and LGBTQs.

This reminds me of the famous Green Lantern scene penned by Denny O’Neil:

It’s a damn shame that comics in the 70s and 80s for all of their problematic elements were in many respects MORE progressive than 98 percent of the tripe being released today.

But then it begs the bigger question why don’t MORE of our real-life “superheroes” speak out against bigotry and injustice: celebrities, athletes, politicians.

Sure, some can’t because they’re under contracts by networks, record labels, movie studios to keep mum. But what about the A-listers who call their own shots?

“Celebrities aren’t supposed to be political.”

And if we were talking about foreign trade or economic reform, I’d probably agree. But equality for marginalized people shouldn’t be a politic. Me being allowed to serve in the military or marry someone outside my race or marry someone of the same gender is not a politic. Equal rights shouldn’t be political and that SHOULD be something that both liberal and conservative parties not only agree on but fight for. And if they don’t, that should be your first clue right there.

To quote Desmond Tutu, “If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.”

And much like the “superheroes” both real and ficticious, their silence on injustice is most deafening.

And when it comes to “Earth’s mightiest heroes” (who are mainly straight and white) who regularly run off to other galaxies to fight intergalactic big bads but don’t lift a finger to alleviate the suffering of their own people on their own planet, as a minority, they just don’t seem all that heroic.

At least not in comparison to the team of minorities who are fighting to protect a world that fears and hates them and survive in it by any means necessary.

I Can Be So Much More

Spinning off of the discussion of the previous post, I thought it would be an excellent opportunity to explain why Cyclops (along with Storm) is not only my favorite X-Man but my favorite comic book character.

Usually when I tell people this, the reaction I often get is along the lines of:
well.......you can guess.Collapse )

“You like Cyclops? Really? What the hell is wrong with you man?”

And it’s understandable because he hasn’t always been portrayed in the most positive light. Let’s keep it real, he was a douchebag. And for years he got on my nerves being Xavier’s apple polisher/personal jockstrap.

But over the years, he’s evolved as a character. And before I knew he became my other favorite X-Man alongside Storm.

I think I like Scott Summers because I can relate to him, just as I can relate to Storm.

Being the first son and the alpha overachieving golden boy perfectionist, I see a lot of myself in Scott. He’s the guy that never questioned his (surrogate) father Xavier and on the cusp of manhood he woke up one day and realized he needed to forge his own path which doesn’t always gel with what your parents have in mind. I think that’s something most firstborns can relate to. You’re often pressured to be perfect to lead the other (siblings/teammates) and set an example but along the way you realize you have to become your own person.

Maybe it's because I always thought he had a really cool power. Maybe it's because of the glasses. Guys in glasses are hot. TRU FAX! TRU FAX!!!!

On a personal note, I’ve always been a sucker for the cleancut vanilla slice of whitebread. Because let’s be real, Scott is fine as hell. Those frequent shirtless panels. GOOD GAWD ALMIGHTY!!!! The things I would do to that man. And when James Marsden (future hubby #2) was cast as Cyclops, I had a nerdgasm and an orgasm all in one. ROFLMAO!!!

They fascinate me. I guess there’s a level of innocence and idealism there that speaks to me. To quote Alanis Morrissette, “And I am fascinated by the spiritual man, I’m humbled by his humble nature.”

People gripe about Superman being boring or bland but personally I think there’s so much more dimension to him than most people give him credit for. Granted he’s not always written in the most complex manner (for that matter neither is Scott) but I’m always intrigued by someone who has the powers of a god and his only weakness, moreso than kryptonite, is also his greatest power. His strong sense of self, moral ethics and doing the right thing even though said godlike powers would corrupt almost anyone else.

Scott is still the boy scout and still the straight arrow. But now he’s got an edge to him. All the life experiences and trials (such as losing Jean) have made him evolve in unexpected manners. He’s the good boy that’s gotten a taste of being bad and he’s trying so hard to walk the fine line of handling it.

Hell you know you’ve become a certifiable badass when you’ve got a worried Wolverine worried telling you that you’re getting too extreme and too hardcore.

Cyclops has become a master strategist and has pulled some plays that would impress Batman. For instance, during Dark Reign, he and the X-Men clashed with Norman Osborn and his crew of Dark X-Men. Even though though Norman beat the living hell out of Scott, Scott played him and outwitted him by inviting the media to witness the fight and thus tying Norman’s hands. And during the recent vampire storyline (which shockingly was a hell of a lot better than I would’ve dared guess), Scott pulled a fast one and outwitted everyone including the other X-Men by outwitting Xarius and Dracula. Even Emma, his telepathic girlfriend, never found out whether or not Scott was bluffing.

I strongly think that Cyclops is going to be the best leader for X-Men and mutants (as well as Storm) because he’s the best of both worlds as far as Xavier and Magneto goes. He has Xavier’s idealism and still continues to fight for a peaceful co-existence. However with only a few hundred mutants left, he knows he don’t have time to fuck around and as such he also has Magneto’s pragmatism and isn’t above handling business by any means necessary such as forming the black ops team: X-Force.

Which I think it’s cool seeing the boy soldier come into his own.

A brilliant strategist, still a boy scout, but now a straight arrow with an edge, he could be considered a hybrid of Superman and Batman which is something I definitely enjoy.

But yeah, that’s why I like him. And I look forward to seeing how he evolves next.

The OXP

My two favorite X-Men and my two favorite comic book characters. I have been dreaming of this pairing for years. OH HELL YES!!!!! THE EPIC OTP!!!!! Or should I say, OXP. The only thing that could equal this level of awesome for me if this were Scott and Peter Rasputin or Scott & Bobby. I could roll with that too.

I don't give a fuck if everyone else on the planet hates this pairing, I AM LOVING THE HELL OUT OF THIS!

And I know white comic book fandom is flipping its shit.

EWWWWWWWWW! THAT'S GROSS!  or  She's too good for him.

White folks always say that about a WOC in an interracial pairing but notice they never mention who would equally worthy for her and it usually results in her being alone and undesired.

And of course let's not forget racist white folks' favorite coded phrase for throwing shade on interracial pairings:

They just have NO CHEMISTRY.

And yes the irony of the blatant racism in a fandom of a comic book series that's based on the Civil Rights movement is not lost on me either.

Why this pairing makes perfect sense? Scott has evolved and has come into his own as a powerful leader. He's a master strategist who has bested the likes of Norman Osborn and Dracula without even trying. He's the overachieving perfectionist golden boy with an edge now. He has Xavier's idealism but Magneto's pragmatism which makes him arguably the best leader for mutants (along with Storm).

He's an alpha male with a sense of nobility and that's the type of exceptional men that Storm goes for. As I've mentioned in the past Storm is a hybrid of Jean Grey and Emma Frost. Jean was the quintessential ingeniue: the girl next door who was coming to terms with her vast power while Emma is the anti-Jean; the accomplished femme fatale, the bad girl, regal, refined powerful. Like Jean, Storm is very nurturing and compassionate, beautiful and possesses a unique charisma while she is hands down the most sophisticated and classiest X-Man. On her best day Emma can't hold a candle to Storm. With Storm being a combination of the two characters (possessing the best characteristics of both) it's little wonder why she and Jean were close as sisters and yet she has a long bitter rivalry with Emma.

And before anyone gets it twisted, I used to be a huge Emma Frost fan from back in the day. Actually not that long ago. In fact, I’m almost convinced that the current Emma isn’t the real Emma Frost but a Skrull spy left over from the Skrull invasion. Because villainous Hellfire Club Emma Frost, badass. You couldn’t fuck with her. Generation-X Emma Frost, the shit!!! This train wreck right here, a hot mess. The writers (read: straight white male fanboys) have reduced a powerful and respected femme fatale to some posable fuck puppet (who no one respects but only tolerate because she's sleeping with Scott) who deflects her constant lying, scheming and insecurities with cattiness with other female X-Men members. This is why Emma has clashed with every major X-Woman in her quest for dominance: Rachel, Kitty Pride, Dani, Rogue, Wolfsbane, Storm, X-23, the list goes on and on. The REAL Emma Frost never had to pull that shit. She never had to soil herself with such pettiness. It's beneath her.

And while the writers keep trying to make the Emma Skrull happen and establish her as the queen bee of mutants, like everyone else, they realize that honor goes to Storm, who is not only the fiercest of the X-Men but the First Lady of Marvel.

Tru Fax! Tru Fax!!! And what was that bullshit again about black women being undesired? My man Scott doesn't think so.

Awww, racist white fandom, are you mad? Y U MAD?!!!! Awwww you mad? Good! NOW PLAY WITH IT!!!! STOP!!!! ROTATE!!!!!

Now if you'll excuse me, I have a new OTP to celebrate.

[commences with arm flailing and booty popping]

Hey Shakira, I see you taking notes, go head on girl. Watch out now Beyonce, I don't think you can handle this. See Eve Torres, let me show you how it's done!!!!
