Those who can't do, don't blog

My girl Ankhesen Mie dropping the truth yet again:
___________________________

So I've been on the blogosphere now (officially) for almost three years. As someone who professionally writes fiction, blogging seemed like a natural segue. It's also been a great way to network with, encourage, and promote fellow artists of color who would otherwise be neglected. Moreover, blogging has been a way to combat the culture of complaining which many people of color have developed here in America. We complain about the absence of color in TV and film. We complain about the whitening of (some of) our musical performers. We complain about the misappropriation of our music, our arts, our cultures, our styles, our slang - you name it, we complain about it.

Complaining is fine. Criticism is healthy. Doing nothing after complaining, however, is unacceptable, and the blogosphere is great for that.

My Media Litmus Test

A little known fact about yours truly.

Since the release of Hollowstone and garnering a respectable following online through places like Ars Marginal, I’m often solicited to review and endorse books, tv shows for virtual strangers and their websites. For many I’ve taken up the opportunities, as many of you are aware and for others I turn down these requests.

It’s interesting because while the solicitors don’t know me well or at all, for some reason they think they are entitled to my time and energy. However if they knew me for five seconds they would know why I might be turning out endorsing the media. Like most people, said time is precious but more than that I have a Litmus Test that I use whenever I ponder on considering new media to consume. Now while there are obviously exceptions to the rule, more often than these are guidelines I run with.

This Litmus Test is a series of simply questions I’ll ask before I even entertain watching a television show, reading a novel, a comic book, etc.

Question 1: Is the lead or central protagonist a person of color?

Question 2: Is the lead or central protagonist an LGBTQ?

Now if the title in question has already failed to pass the first two checks, it’s not looking good but it doesn’t mean it’s automatically eliminated. There are two saving grace questions I’ll pose then.

Question 3: Is the writing exceptional? And by exceptional, I mean would I as a fellow writer be impressed? By exceptional, I mean is it on some Octavia Butler, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Joss Whedon, Russell T Davies, JK Rowling level of exceptional?

Question 4: Is there eye candy? Because if the eye candy is pretty enough I might be willing to overlook a lot but there better be some smoking eye candy?

Question 5: Does this project feature Gina Torres in any shape or fashion. Because if the Goddess herself is involved, game on!

No? Nada? Then chances are I won’t be reading or tuning in.

“Oh but Denny,” many of you say, “You’re being SOOOOOOOO unreasonable?”

Am I? Am I really?

Decade of a Million Dreams

The following was forwarded to me by a buddy:

From October 1, 2007 to December 31, 2008, Disney celebrated its Decade of a Million Dreams. Accompanying the campaign was the Disney Dream Portrait Series, a gallery of photos shot by famed photographer Annie Leibovitz and featuring famous personalities as Disney characters.

How Racism Works In the Comic Industry

Over on Bleeding Cool, Mr. Easton breaks down beautifully why there's only 3 percent of blacks working in the Big Two companies.

This quote here sums up why the comic industry is in the state it is in now:

"I reflect on the words of my friend Peter Briggs, the “Hellboy” screenwriter who was once asked “Why do Hollywood films suck so often?” Briggs replied, “Incompetence is rife in this business, and egos make it worse. And there’s a culture of poker buddy, frat boy nepotism that fosters ‘who you know’ and filters out genuine talent. And that’s why bad movies get made.”Replace movies with comic books in this equation. Add in egos fueled by bigotry and the sum is about 3.0%"

But this is the quote that really brings it home:

"I’m going to reveal a secret about Black males – a lot of us are naïve idealists. We actually believe that people are going to judge us on the content of our character rather than the color of our skin. What you see is our reaction to constantly having our hearts broken by the realization that yet another White person is counted as an enemy. Disappointment can be worse than hate."

Read this now. And if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go buy and read Mr. Easton's graphic novel Shadowlaw.

Some Novel Reads

While pondering on the fact that it’s already September and this year has flown by (wasn’t yesterday New Year’s or something), I suddenly realized that my reading schedule is about to pick up with some most excellent releases.

Kyle XY

Preview This

"If you don't want us to judge a story based on its preview, then don't release the preview, because literally the only reason that anyone has ever released any previews of any story, in all of human history, is to get them to judge the story based on the preview. The only real point of disagreement here is that we're not judging the story POSITIVELY based on the preview, and that we're not pledging to BUY the story based on the preview, and that's the fault of YOUR incompetence in creating the preview, because all we're doing is judging the story BY THE SAME STANDARDS THAT YOU *WANT* US TO JUDGE IT.

For as much as they complain about their own audience's so-called "whining," entertainment media hacks are the most unforgivably entitled spoiled babies in existence. "YOU DON'T HAVE A RIGHT TO CRITICIZE IT UNTIL YOU'VE PAID US MONEY TO SEE IT, at which point we won't care about your criticisms because we still have your money.""

The Heterosexist Narrative

And my girl Ankhesen Mie comes out swinging, HARD!!!!!
__________________

After battling the worst bout of writer’s block I’ve had in a while, I finally rescued myself by coming to one of my momentous decisions: no more stories where love is a central theme, and no more sex scenes (unless they have a comical edge).

It has nothing to do with being a prude or anything like that; it has more to do with the fact that romance as we know it needs to take a holiday.

I feel – and this is just my humble opinion – that as we are seeing a stubborn whitening of everything in media, we are also seeing a stubborn straightening of everyone. In addition to the obsession of showing white people in romantic relationships, I feel there’s been an added emphasis on showing them in straight relationships.

In other words, not only is Hollywood pushing back against the growing number of people of color in this country, the country’s own origins of color, and the dominance of color abroad, Hollywood is pushing back against the increasingly visible and vocal gay population which is rightfully sick and tired of second-class citizenship.

Random Fact #29: In my youth I did gymnastics off and on and that’s definitely the one sport I wish I had pursued heavily.

Now I’m not saying Gabby Douglas is a real life bonafied superheroine, but Barbara Gordon aka Batgirl started as a world class gymnast.

And Gabby can clearly rock the purple and yellow and a cape and cowl. Just putting that out there.

I haven’t kept up with the Olympics, save for the gymnastics and of course the men’s swim meets for obvious reasons. ;-)
