So while most people sleep, take medicine and veg out in front of the TV while getting over the illness, leave it to me to brainstorm and pen essays on social justice.
One of the things that has always fascinated, perplexed and frankly outright pissed me off in regards to white conservatives is the presumption that is frequently made by them especially when racism is brought up: I’ve never had anyone challenge my views but they’re going to be the first ones to do it. I don’t know how to think properly but they’re going to challenge me to think independently (i.e. blindly like them) and not be so gullible to liberal brainwashing. Or some variation thereof but in short my feeble Negro brain can do rational or complex thinking but thank God for mighty whitey who is going to teach me how to think properly. Cuz Massah sho gonna teech me proppa.
I thought this just happened to me but then I began witnessing this crap with other POC loved ones and realized what a pattern that goes with a white supremacist mindset.
And trust it is a white supremacist mindset.
You see, when I disagree with someone, I may think they are morally or factually wrong, but I wouldn’t be so arrogant enough to presume that no one’s ever challenged their beliefs before or I’m going to train and mold them on how to properly think “independently.” I’ll just cite the evidence as to why my position is correct and keep it moving. Long as they aren’t hindering my time or progress I couldn’t care less.
What’s also amusing is that the same concern trolls who believe they are doing me a service by “making me think” and “challenging my beliefs” are making the same tired arguments I’ve heard since I was 8 years old. Never anything new or intelligent or original.
It never fails. I can talk with a couple of my black, Asian, and Latino loved ones about racism we all endure in this society and without fail, some condescending caucasian will roll in and tell us we’re wrong about our experiences and they are there to derail our discussion because we need someone to challenge us to think properly.
The funny thing I’ve noticed is that like myself, the other POCs never correct these assholes on their presumptions. We let them go in their delusion believing we’ve never had any experience with having our beliefs, intelligence, honesty, sanity, challenged for daring to call out racism. We continue to let the concern trolls think they have the upperhand because it’s always that more gratifying when we school them with facts and dismantle those same tired arguments we’ve heard for years. This usually leads to them flouncing in rage because somehow we’re incapable of having any kind of reasonable dialogue. Doesn’t matter how polite or how diplomatic the POC was, we’re still going to be deemed to militant, too angry and too wrong in our beliefs and our experiences.
Most people think I became a liberal because I was brainwashed by the Left and have never had any exposure to the Conservative Right. The irony is that quite the reverse is true. I grew up in conservative churches, went to conservative schools, was surrounded by conservatives and spent my adolescence reading the Bible from end to end. While I was never conservative myself, I got an intimate look into the other side. What I quickly saw is what the Conservative Right taught was a stark contradiction to what Jesus stood for. The treatment of women, minorities, LGBTQs, the poor. This isn’t to say that I’ve never encountered good conservatives, because I have. And you’ll find good and bad in just about any group. That said, my beliefs and my opinion, is an informed one whether you agree with it or not.
I can’t tell you how many times someone has presumed to know me so well in all of five seconds that they’ve told me that “No one has ever challenged my beliefs before.”
Each time I’m told that, I often flashback to my days in high school where I was the only black kid in the midst of a heated debate with the rest of my class (including the teacher) about historical facts. Debates, where more often than not, I usually held my own.
Each time I’m told I’ve never had anyone challenge my beliefs, I flashback to the moment where I’m the first student in my high school’s history to win a Youth Legislature Award, or my tenure as Campus Democrats president, having my own column at my college newspaper. I haven’t even mentioned the articles and blog posts I’ve penned that have gone viral over the years. Or this past year alone where I’ve traveled across the country promoting my novel and discussing and debating social justice and equality for women, POCs, LGBTQs and other minorities. I’ve certainly never had to learn factual data and be ready to spout it off like a pop quiz for every racist douchebag whoever saw fit to question, my intelligence, my sanity or you know reality about the world we reside in.
We’re not going to even mention that I’m a minority in the South and how often I have argue for my humanity on almost a daily basis but clearly I’ve NEVER had anyone challenge my beliefs.
Pro-tip, to white conservatives. Disagree with me on any and/or all points to your heart’s content. That’s more than reasonable and that’s more than fair. You are certainly entitled to your opinion.
However, if you believe that I need to be taught how to think properly, I can’t handle opposing views, or I’ve never had my beliefs challenged, I’m going to insist for your sake that you not engage, because it will not end well for you. It will not end well for many reasons but two main ones:
-If you’re so arrogant enough to allow yourself to be wrong about one inconsequential detail such as this, then it’s safe bet that you’re wrong about much bigger issues.
-If you think I’ve never had to hold my own in a debate and you’re the first person I’ve gone up against, then you clearly, obviously, have no iota of a clue who you’re fucking with.
