    $\begingroup$ What exactly is the mathematical situation here? Do you consider a subset of (indistinguishable) particles as the subsystem (because you talk about Slater determinants), or what? Can you add equations: What do you mean exactly with "trace out" and "effective Hamiltonian"? I can imagine several things. That being said, I think the question could be very well suited here, but you really need to add several details. $\endgroup$ Commented Oct 27 at 9:08
  • $\begingroup$ Usually non-hermitian Hamiltonians model relaxation... to the ground state. I am not sure though that your case fits into system+bath description. $\endgroup$ Commented Oct 27 at 10:39
