  • "Publishing the source code potentially allows another researcher in a different group to produce paper n+1 before the original author does or at least to produce a paper that covers a significant fraction of the ground that the author was expecting to cover as part of this research stream." This does not sound so easy to me. Most people (including myself) would have difficulty understanding the kind of code researchers write, without help from the authors, let alone extending it.
