Dec 28, 2012 at 4:37 comment added Loren Pechtel I think you are confusing the notion of open source with copyright. Making something open source does NOT remove your copyright to it!

Dec 27, 2012 at 20:08 comment added Keith Thompson @delnan: It depends on the context. If I tell you not to wear shoes, you don't need a good reason, or any reason at all, to wear shoes, unless I'm in some position of authority over you. In this case, though, I'd say the copyright holder has excellent grounds for telling recipients not to do X, X being removing the copyright notice.

Dec 27, 2012 at 19:27 comment added user7043 If you're explicitly told not to do X, then you better have damn good reasons to do X, regardless of what the court says (if it's even involved).
Dec 27, 2012 at 19:25 comment added user40980 I would suggest reading Circular 92 Chapter 5 section 506(d) of the Copyright law.
Dec 27, 2012 at 19:21 comment added Timo Geusch Why do you want to remove the copyright notice in the first place?
Dec 27, 2012 at 19:20 comment added CodesInChaos When distributing software you need a license from the author. The main point that's unclear is how a court would calculate damages.
Dec 27, 2012 at 19:19 comment added Jeffery Thomas IANAL: The text says you can modify it any way except for removing the copyright notice. My guess is that removing the copyright notice is not a good idea.
