  • I'm not sure "notorious" is the right adjective, since it has a connotation of being bad. Some engineers might have groaned at the number of designs that used such chips in scenarios where alternatives might have been cheaper, or that would have benefitted from the DSR/DTR/DCD/RI, but the MAX-232 was a good solid "It Just Works" device for applications which could get by with Rx/Tx, and one additional pair of transmit/receive pins (usually RTS and CTS).
