correcting paladin multiclass statements, formatting, re-adding frostblood (half-)orcs
Aug 24, 2020 at 12:27 comment added KRyan @Zachiel The SRD is an official publication of WotC, so yes, it can be trusted (any given copy of it could have errors, but that would be surprising since they are mostly just putting WotC’s .rtf files in HTML). Anyway, you are correct, I may have misremembered that stupid rule—or it may be that there is a community that reads this restriction into the contrast between the similar—but not identical—rules if the monk and paladin classes, and that’s what I picked up on. Still, I’ll revise, probably in quite a few answers.
Aug 24, 2020 at 10:47 comment added Zachiel @Kryan about the paladin multiclass, if the SRD is to be trusted, it only applies to paladins who gains levels in other classes. When you gain your first level as cleric you're not a paladin yet, the rule only kick in if you multiclass out of paladin.

about dragonborn, which I somehow forgot

Commonmark migration
Feb 16, 2018 at 14:40 comment added KRyan @Bowdzone Dragon Magic has a little sidebar saying dragon shamans count as having Draconic Heritage, which grants the dragonblood subtype. It specifically references a dragon shaman taking Dragonfire Assault. It doesn’t come out and say dragon shamans are dragonblood, but I think it’s probably safe to say. In any event the class is awful and shouldn’t be recommended, so I’ll add some caveats there.
Feb 16, 2018 at 9:21 comment added Bowdzone Dragonfire Inspiration requires that you have the dragonblood subtype [...] or it could mean dipping dragon shaman[...] I could not find anything in the published rules that a Dragon Shaman is of the dragonblood subtype. However, it does not make sense that he is not and any homebrew version of the DS I saw included the subtype. Just be aware of it if you plan on going that route (although I can't rule out missing it)

Jun 22, 2016 at 18:23 comment added kleineg Knight-Paladin, Crusader, Gestalt Theurge, maybe Ruby Knight Vindicator. 9th level maneuvers, 6th level divine spells, knight's challenge, auras. With harmonious knight feature, Imperious Command, Thicket of Blades (maybe Mage Slayer). Buff and heal your allies and yourself, lock down foes, deal good damage, be a big bad son of a gun. As long as the DM allows homebrews and is not worried about melee characters who don't stink.

minor fixes

Jul 28, 2015 at 19:02 comment added KRyan @eimyr I have added to the explanation of why it is ideal to take non-initiating class levels first; is this clear to you? I’m not sure I’ve been clear on that point.

added a note about knight-paladin
Jul 27, 2015 at 21:31 comment added MrLemon As usual, leave it up to KRyan to sell you Tome of Battle, and absolutely rightfully so in this case. Great idea with the variant Paladins.

a bit more on battle howler and half-orc

noting battle howler of Gruumsh, racial options
Jul 27, 2015 at 13:50 comment added KRyan @eimyr Actually, correction: you can’t take other class levels before paladin levels, strictly speaking. Paladins have a special multiclass rule that prevents this. It’s an awful rule that is rarely enforced, but it does exist.
Jul 27, 2015 at 13:41 comment added KRyan @Li-aungYip I had to look up which Dragon volume had the LN paladin variant...

added 1 character in body
Jul 27, 2015 at 13:37 comment added KRyan @eimyr You can take crusader levels first, but I recommend just going straight crusader if you do that. Paladin levels first takes advantage of the way initiator levels work for multiclass characters: because you get way more maneuvers at 1st than you do at later levels, it’s best to take other class levels first so your first level happens at higher Initiator Level and those can choose from higher level maneuvers.

about domains for cleric
Jul 27, 2015 at 13:23 comment added eimyr Wow. Just wow. When you have more time, could you please explain why after all this I would need to take Paladin levels first? Is there anything wrong with starting as a Crusader from lvl 1?
Jul 27, 2015 at 13:22 comment added Li-aung Yip How the heck do you remember all this stuff?!
Jul 27, 2015 at 13:03 comment added KRyan Gotta run, have some more thoughts that will be added soon.
