- 2Pretty much. A last resort universal standard, when other forms of communication have failed or are unavailable. R2 and 3PO communicate via audio because they have no standard communication interface. Astromechs and protocol droids would have little reason to interact normally, for the same reason that your power drill doesn't have a standard socket to interface with your laptop. So R2 and 3PO use the standard backup communication medium, which conveniently for the audience lets us see the characters interacting, instead of standing inert and having conversations via some inaudible protocol.Wolfie Inu– Wolfie Inu2016-01-12 09:06:06 +00:00Commented Jan 12, 2016 at 9:06
- 1ADSL and VDSL are also just "using tones" to communicate, but instead of only being able to use tones from 300 to 3300 Hz, they use up to 12MHz.Mark Booth– Mark Booth2016-01-12 14:04:06 +00:00Commented Jan 12, 2016 at 14:04

A tag is a keyword or label that categorizes your question with other, similar questions. Choose one or more (up to 5) tags that will help answerers to find and interpret your question.
Type the name of the science fictional or fantastical work your question is about (Example:
star-wars).For questions not specific to any one work, use concept tags to describe your question (Example:
story-identification).Tagging rules:
- complete the sentence: my question is about...
- use tags that describe things or concepts that are essential, not incidental to your question
- favor using existing popular tags
- read the descriptions that appear below the tag
If your question is primarily about a topic for which you can't find a tag:
- combine multiple words into single-words with hyphens (e.g. story-identification), up to a maximum of 35 characters
- creating new tags is a privilege; if you can't yet create a tag you need, then post this question without it, then ask the community to create it for you
