if that were the case i'd also assume that someone else would have been able to create the same type of automated system eliminating the need for them to use a phone as a connection in later parts. it is a huge plot device. i mean you'd think they would have something like that to begin with if it were possible. i think the wachowskis didn't really think it entirely through. i think a far more plausible explanation is something to do with him working with the agents and them disconnecting him from the inside. @Alex - More plausible than what the writers said about the world that they created? Commented May 7, 2017 at 13:54
  • when things are not entirely clear it leaves room for speculation. my opinion is just that: speculation based on the matrix universe as we know it. i feel as though when creating large grandiose universes its difficult to cover all the basis - hence plot holes. this would account for a major one as it would eliminate the need for a phone, which functions as a measure of urgency and a plot device in and of itself; i refuse to believe that in all the time the resistance has existed nobody but cypher figured this crucial thing out. so i tend to air on the side that the bros didn't really think it through and that there is a more plausible explanation. Commented May 7, 2017 at 14:11
