The mining sector of Liberia: current practices and environmental challenges
Abstract: Liberia is endowed with an impressive stock of mineral reserves and has traditionally relied on mining, namely iron ore, gold, and diamonds, as a major source of income. The recent growth in the mining sector has the potential to contribute significantly to employment, income generation, and infrastructure development. However, the development of these mineral resources has significant environmental impacts that often go unnoticed. This paper presents an overview of the Liberian mining sector from historical, …

“…Oil palm concessions interfere to a lesser degree but are present along the southern coast (Figure 7b). Mining concessions (Figure 7c), which have resulted in widespread tropical deforestation in Liberia in the past (Wilson et al., 2017), largely avoid the areas of high connectivity importance in the northern and southern networks, but they may interfere with connectivity in the northeast peninsula (Figure 6a). Recall that this area was not included in a separate subregion connectivity analysis due to its proximity to international boundaries.…”

“…We place a specific focus on two aspects that are key for ensuring robust and accurate SDMs (Elith & Leathwick, 2009) (a) including appropriate and relevant environmental predictors, and (b) carefully considering scale. We use MaxEnt (Phillips et al., 2006), which is one of the most popular SDM softwares (Merow et al., 2013), has been found to outperform other types of SDMs (Elith et al., 2006, 2011; Phillips & Dudík, 2008; Wilson et al., 2017) and has been used for modelling great ape populations in Africa, including chimpanzees (Bonnin et al., 2020; Fitzgerald et al., 2018; Freeman et al., 2019; Junker et al., 2012).…”

“…After the end of the wars in 1990s, the government of Liberia made revival of the mining industry an explicit objective. It has attracted much foreign investment and created tens of thousands of jobs (Wilson et al, 2017). However, environmental protection instruments, like Environmental Impact Assessment and stimulating best practices from local knowledge, are lacking (Wilson et al, 2017).…”

However, environmental protection instruments, like Environmental Impact Assessment and stimulating best practices from local knowledge, are lacking (Wilson et al, 2017). And although the mining industry is very important for the economy, it is recognized that it continues to deteriorate the environment.…”
