- Thanks so much! I will try that. As a side conceptual question, if my farm has a service application, does it reside on a Central Administration web application, or does the CA act just as portal to the service applications (that allows admins access to the service apps) and as long as the service is running on one of the servers on the farm, it will automatically recognize that - say - Search is working on APPSERVER1234 instead of APPSERVER5678 now.C L– C L2014-07-17 15:03:33 +00:00Commented Jul 17, 2014 at 15:03
- 1Central admin is a portal and give you access the services applications. SharePoint is smart enough to recognize the services app if it is running on any server. as i said earlier, you need extra work for UPA & Search..but for MMS simply start on other server solve the issue....One Tip, once you move the services and add new server and remove the old....clear the config cache on all server in farm so that no cached item cause any issue.Waqas Sarwar MVP– Waqas Sarwar MVP ♦2014-07-17 15:27:51 +00:00Commented Jul 17, 2014 at 15:27
- Sorry, last question! When you say "clear config cache", do you mean iisreset? Sorry if that's a newbie question.... I'm trying to learn more along the way, too :)C L– C L2014-07-17 15:31:58 +00:00Commented Jul 17, 2014 at 15:31

How to Tag
A tag is a keyword or label that categorizes your question with other, similar questions. Choose one or more (up to 5) tags that will help answerers to find and interpret your question.
- complete the sentence: my question is about...
- use tags that describe things or concepts that are essential, not incidental to your question
- favor using existing popular tags
- read the descriptions that appear below the tag
If your question is primarily about a topic for which you can't find a tag:
- combine multiple words into single-words with hyphens (e.g. sharepoint-online), up to a maximum of 35 characters
- creating new tags is a privilege; if you can't yet create a tag you need, then post this question without it, then ask the community to create it for you
