  • I don't know any mathematicians (and I do know quite a few) that start counting from one. They deal with 0 when needed in where needed, but in real life they all count from one. Commented Aug 18, 2011 at 14:26

  • @Kenneth Yes it would. If a compiler told you an error occurred on line 5 (1-based, as per convention), but you jump to line 5 (0-based, as per the question) in your text editor, that is exactly the problem that would happen by breaking conventions. Commented Oct 20, 2023 at 4:37
