To convince your colleagues, tell them that unit tests are just examples how to use the code you are going to maintain, so they are an essential part of the documentation. I guess they don't consider "documentation" also as "optional".

This means that we expect to parttake in the development process, we will own the code and we will most likely be extending the code several times. Most important: The extension will not always be made by the company that produced version 1.0
