Jul 24, 2015 at 23:41 comment added Marlon I'm just laughing at the comparison...tractors and cars is not the same as windows and linux. They both are operating systems or in your comparison they are both tractors or cars. BTW Mac kernel...is based off BSD, which is 'nix or a flavor of Posix compliant OS so it would actually help to know linux in that case.
May 12, 2011 at 0:59 comment added Greg Hendershott @dukeofgaming I agree. People who are interested in deploying an application that might need to scale up across many servers are going to prefer Linux for a variety of economic and technological reasons.
Feb 23, 2011 at 8:08 comment added Marlon Maybe a "regular combustion engine" Ford mechanic doesn't need to learn about John Deer tractors, but I bet learning about electric/hybrid car will come in handy soon.
Feb 20, 2011 at 20:24 comment added user8685 @Maxtor: "Linux is considered a 'must learn' for programmers of all types these days" - that is simply not true. And there has never been such notion.
Feb 7, 2011 at 5:38 comment added Kirk Broadhurst @dukeofgaming I've never had to deploy my ASP.NET apps onto a linux server, and I doubt I ever will!
Feb 7, 2011 at 5:32 comment added Muad'Dib @dukeofgaming, you can run IIS and PHP no problem. linux would be GOOD to learn, but necessary? not really.
Feb 7, 2011 at 5:17 comment added dukeofgaming He will need to learn linux if he ever expects to deploy his programs by himself on a production environment, which can be most of the time linux.
Dec 3, 2010 at 5:49 comment added Geek @Max: It will only make you smart if you know how to use it and know how and why Linux does it. The Linux source code has vast knowledge embedded in it but like Muad said, it is not a MUST.
Dec 3, 2010 at 1:01 comment added Maxtor The reason I ask was because Linux is considered a 'must learn' for programmers of all types these days. I may be wrong however.
