Don't just understand what the best practice is, but what the tangible benefits of a best practice. The allows you to connect the best practice with appropriateness and also ensures effectiveness in applying the practice to have the best effect. If you just recite that a best practice accomplishes "separation of concerns", then you probably can't be sure you are slicing the right way to reap the benefits of the practice.
