    I don't agree to make sure no letters are accepted -- go ahead and accept the, then just ignore them. People naturally write extensions with a leading "x" (eg: 555-1212 x123). Why not allow that? Humans can parse it just fine, and if the computer needs to use it, it can strip out the non-digits trivially. Commented Feb 3, 2012 at 17:35
