+1 for good focus - "reality bites". Git provides such a huge toolspace and so many options, it can be hard to know what's smart and what's not. I'm a firm believer in not creating work for work's sake, so I'll probably stick with your advice.

create code fences with backticks ` or tildes ~

like so

add language identifier to highlight code

put returns between paragraphs
for linebreak add 2 spaces at end

indent code by 4 spaces
backtick escapes `like _so_`
quote by placing > at start of line
to make links (use https whenever possible)
