    Exceptions are for unusual situations that you expect to encounter in a working application, like in your example here. Assertions are for situations that you expect to never encounter. So, if you do encounter them, there must be a bug in your code. In your example, and exception is clearly the right approach. But assertions are still very useful to catch bugs.
