    what is "An implicit index"? does it just imply that there's a b*tree without creating it? Commented Mar 30, 2012 at 16:16

    @Stephanie Page: It's an expression I just made up for this answer to mean an index that is automatically created. If you declare a primary key, SQL server automatically creates and index for it. But not ff you declare a foreign key (some other DB systems do). Commented Mar 30, 2012 at 16:41
