    I had to escape the $, for $LOCAL and $REMOTE to prevent them from becoming "" and "". I would edit to say git config --globla difftool.winmerge.cmd "winmerge.sh \"\$LOCAL\" \"\$REMOTE\"" Commented Aug 19, 2009 at 16:52
