    +1 Sometimes re-inventing the wheel is a great way to know how wheels work! Of course, in most situations, if you already have a good library you can leverage, go with it; but from an educational standpoint, you'll most likely learn a lot from rolling your own (especially from your mistakes). I'd choose a project of my own for such experimentation, though. Commented Jun 15, 2009 at 18:31
