  • $\begingroup$ Facebook, Microsoft and Google (and many others large companies I suppose) employ a lot of visiting researchers, and full-time or part-time academics. I think it is these people (lured in from academia) and the virtually limitless resources of these corporations that primarily drive progress in the industry. $\endgroup$ Commented Jul 25, 2014 at 9:40
