    $\begingroup$ I am not here to dispute your recommendation of books that could help many people. But to imply that Tufte, Cleveland and Wilkinson are engaged in abstract theoretical exercises is a misrepresentation: their books are all stuffed with examples based on real data (whereas some of the authors you mention employ fake data).
