LyX's importing works quite well. The biggest issue I had when using this in practice is that LaTeX comments look ugly when imported into LyX and LyX comments are lost when exporting to LaTeX. But I agree with the conclusion -- its best for all developers to use LaTeX or to use LyX and export to LaTeX if the publisher wants it right at the end.
