congratulations! I always forget how this works and by the time I'd reread the relevant bits of the manual and messed up a couple of times, you'd posted your own solution. I've posted mine as well, because it is a bit simpler and involves fewer calculations with pgfmath (always a good thing given how slow it is). however, I will delete it if you'd prefer.
