Little Spring things

All of a sudden my garden is filled with little groups of Spring things. They seem to have arrived overnight!

I love these little clumps of Tete a Tete daffodils. Every year they seem to get brighter.

Primroses, such a sign of new beginnings. Mine do their own thing, and appear in the lawn, the beds and in the rockery. I think they quite enjoy choosing their own space.

Tiny purple Iris in a large pot by the front door. Soon they will be followed by narcissi and pink Tulips.

A first camellia. It won't be long before this bush will be covered in flowers.

One last photo. A mixture of little daffodils, primroses and crocus. As you can see, the primroses have moved into the lawn.
 It's a happy sight.

Our Ferry

While I was reading Lorrie's interesting account of the ferry crossing from Vancouver Island to the mainland, it occurred to me that we too have a nearby (but slightly different) ferry.
Our ferry crosses the water from Trelissick Gardens (near my home) on the left side of the map, to the Roseland Peninsula on the right. It saves a car journey of about 25 miles, through Truro.

This amazing photo, taken pre 1888, shows the first attempts at crossing, using horses, two rowing boats tied together and planks laid across them.

Here's the next version, bringing a horse and cart over.
A group of gentlemen worked together in 1887, forming a company to run a steam/chain ferry to bring livestock and people over the water.

The King Harry Steam Ferry was initiated in 1888 as a submerged chain ferry Bridge, using a steam engine to pull the ferry along the chains, and replacing a manually propelled barge that was previously used on the route. (Wikipedia)

Apparently a gentleman's horse was permitted on the ferry, while the farmer's horse had to swim by the side!

Below is today's version of the Ferry, the 7th one, I believe.
I remember as a child, travelling across on one of the older ferries, with my bike, ready to cycle to St Mawes with my Mum.

The Ferry today is so popular especially with holiday visitors. It brings not only cars, but cyclists, work vans, small buses and even Ambulances. It takes between 10 and 15 minutes to cross, and you can hear the chains underneath clanking as it moves. It runs every 20 minutes most days, though very bad weather will mean that it stops.

It's a very different Ferry from the old days!

Very random mutterings.

 Random mutterings,

It's a very boring day. The sky has seemingly never changed from dusk to morning. There's a heavy mist and absolutely no sun.

There are four seagulls sitting on the roof of a nearby house.

I had a 24 hour heart monitor fitted this morning, state of the art! The last time I had one of those it was a mass of things stuck to me  and a little gadget to clip on a belt. This one is tiny and only stuck to a bit of my chest. So clever.

A girl has walked by with a dog. This happens about a thousand times a day.....different people, different dogs of course.

There's a Special Offer from a company that I like, for a wool cardigan (£20 off! Free postage!). Do I need another cardigan? It's so tempting, but sensible me has just listed all the cardigans that I have (that's the pale blue, the grey, the navy, the second gray.....) Which leaves colours like Lilac and Pink. I dont need a new cardigan.

I had a bad allergic reaction to a Night cream this week. I have used Loreal products before, but not this one, and never again. Burning, irritation, redness, swelling. Ouch. Lots of Aloe Vera needed.

A man walked by with two dogs wearing dear little jackets. (Dogs not man)

My neighbour carried lunch to another neighbour who is unwell.

Two cars (red, white) drove by. All human life is here.

All this post-Pneumonia 'resting' is very wearing! I need to do something creative. It's bitterly cold so gardening is out. Maybe a little light Tapestry work. Very Jane Austen.

Tomorrow will be either, more of the same (dogs, cars, people), or hopefully, brighter.

They're here!

At last!
I planted a circle of snowdrops some years ago, around my Cherry tree. I wondered if they were going to appear, but , here they are.
Just one clump to begin with , but hopefully the circle will soon show up.

I feel well enough to have a little outing, so if the weather is fine tomorrow, I'm going to go to Trelissick Gardens where apparently the snowdrops are fully out.

Later.... it rained. And rained.
I hope I can get there soon.

Thank you for all your 'non favourite' words and phrases. I agree with all of them and particularly liked Betty's 'Important Chairman of the  Board 'sayings!

A time away.

Home again after a few days away in Tavistock, a small market town in Devon. It's somewhere I love to return to with its interesting a...
