Due to the (in)famous USL vs UCB lawsuit, in the '80s it was doubtful if the use of said software would be allowed further, and the GNU project was born to redo it all from scratch without reference to the original. The one central piece missing for the GNU system is still the kernel... meanwhile Linus started fooling around with his toy operating system. There are several Unix work-alikes around (look for Minix, for example). | |
