    Some file managers analyze file content before filename extension (maybe they even always ignore the extension, not sure). E.g. in KDE's Dolphin if you have GIF images associated with a browser and PNG with image viewer, renaming file.png PNG file to file.gif will still open the image viewer. And if you empty the file, it'll open in text editor. Commented Aug 8, 2014 at 11:24
