When it's not a terminal, what you get is an underscore, plus the oldest control character in the book: backspace. It produces an underlined "19" as underscore backspace 1 underscore backspace 9.

@hobbs I don't get that on util-linux 2.29.1 -- nothing is output at all under the current date when not connected to a TTY.
