Fantastic, thank you so much! This book has been really good so far so I'm a bit surprised it would make what seemingly appears to be an error. Thanks for setting me straight.

I'm not surprised at all. Accurate shell documentation not written by either a standards body actively maintaining a standard to which shells conform or someone who is personally involved in implementing a major shell is vanishingly rare; published books are no exception.
