  • Thank you! That worked for me too (though there must be something amiss with my grub setup as I had to edit /boot/grub/grub.cfg directly). It seems I now don't need to mess with the /dev/tty* permissions either. Commented Jan 16 at 13:04
  • I have a longer-standing annoyance, in case you have any thoughts on that too: there's a delay of about 15 seconds when launching X using startx. The delay occurs after ~/.xserverrc runs but before ~/.xinitrc. I thought it might have been due to a lack of DDC on this machine (I'm using a CRT with BNC connectors!) but it still happens when using a normal VGA cable. Commented Jan 16 at 13:14
