Mar 15 at 18:07 comment added user10489 Using an external usb hard drive with a flexible USB cable instead of a usb stick is more likely to be stable and less likely to die from too many writes wearing out the flash memory. External power for that might also help, but also makes it more likely to get unplugged accidentally.

I use a SSD on my Windows laptop after some issues with dual boot where total reinstall from Dell erased my Kubuntu install. Better to use lighter weight flavor particularly if using slower flash drive. I found full installs on flash drive to write very slowly, but if enough RAM for working cache then functional. If HDD, make sure you have separate power, not just USB as often USB ports do not have enough power for HDDs.
