So the website I'm working on has the following pages with the titles as follows (examples):

How to fix your widget when its not working right

The basics of widget repair - get stared the easy way

What you'll need to repair your broken widget

The premise seems to have been that the title (and descriptions which are also unique but about the same subject), would make Google search happy.

But, the actual content of the pages are, barring a paragraph of two, pretty close to identical.

What's the way forward to not have Google shoot these into high orbit as being dupicate content whilst still having different searches for the same thing find a suitable page?

You can definitely rank for all those terms making a long piece of content answering all those questions. An article like "How to repair and deal with a broken widget?"

With H2 title I will add the additional keywords related to "issues with widgets"

If you write 3 pieces of content, Google will get confused about what to rank. It's not the amount of posts you publish. It's about write adding your expertise, your experience fixing broken widgets and educate the reader so you can become a trustful resource. Make sure to add images and it's possible a video as well. Then Google will rank your content, because you are the one who explain in details the "how to"

I hope this help!
