How customer reviews and ratings work
Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

3 out of 5 stars
Good music for Tony Rice and flatpicking fans.
Good addition to the collection. I only gave 3 stars because the CD case came cracked up in different spots . The cracks probably happened on delivery but was a little surprised to see when buying a new CD.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2020As I heard of Tony's passing on Christmas Day a few days ago, I decided to check my collection and found that I was missing this album - I don't know why. It is terrific. This is a wonderful collection, and his playing and singing are outstanding. He will be missed, for sure.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 10, 2016Absolutely a high-water mark for bluegrass. It's a tragedy what has happened to Tony's voice.
Unique in that there is no banjo in the CD. You do not miss it.
This is probably one of the 3 most important bluegrass albums ever recorded, right up there with the first "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" album.
The title cut, Manzanita, with David Grisman on mandolin, is super addictive. And really hard to play.
Little Sadie, Nine Pound Hammer, Hold Watcha Got...terrific versions. The first cut, Old Train, is super hot and the guitar, mandolin, and fiddle work are superb.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2018Groundbreaking album that took bluegrass into the cosmos. Stellar musicianship all around by all the players....Rice, Anger, Bush, Grisman, Douglas, Phillips, and even Ricky Skaggs. Some of these guys were well-known at the time and some were just known to a few. They are all bona fide superstars now.The title track is a classic, and the energy is maintained throughout, even on the cover of Gordon Lightfoot's "Home From the Forest" ( Tony is a huge Gordo fan).
- Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2012Even though I'm only a couple of years out of school, I'm going to sound distinctly 'get off my lawn' ish for saying this. While music journalists and bloggers are busy spending countless wasted hours debating Katy Perry's style choices or Gaga's latest spaceship entrance at some meaningless awards show, what they really should be doing is putting on this album and enjoying the incredible interplay of Tony Rice and his bandmates. Tony's guitar playing is brilliantly inventive and so crisp and clean, it almost defies description. Coupled with Jerry Douglas's masterful dobro playing, Tony's supremely underrated voice, and their choice of tunes that both showcase incendiary playing and pay homage to the rich history of Bluegrass music, and you get an album that absolutely shines from all angles. I could listen to this on repeat, and often do. Six stars.

arokhReviewed in Germany on June 28, 20135.0 out of 5 stars Tony Rice, muss man mehr sagen?
MalbooReviewed in the United Kingdom on April 29, 20245.0 out of 5 stars Excellent bluegrass!
You won’t be disappointed with a CD from Tony Rice. This is bluegrass at it’s best! With musicians such as Ricky Skaggs, David Grisman, Jerry Douglas and Sam Bush it can’t go wrong. Highly recommended!
