Ted Lerner was a real estate developer and the owner of the Washington Nationals baseball team. He died in February 2023 at age 97.
In 1952, a 26-year-old Lerner borrowed $250 from his wife to start a real estate company, selling homes for developers.
He sold 22,000 of them, then decided to become a builder. His Lerner Enterprises grew to be among the largest owners of real estate in the Washington, D.C area.
In 2006, Lerner bought the Nationals for $450 million. He passed control of the team to his son Mark in 2018.
The Lerner family has donated to charities including Children's National Hospital in D.C., George Washington University and Hebrew University in Jerusalem.
