  • After their journey around the Moon, the four astronauts 🧑🚀 of Artemis II are on their way back to Earth 🌍 This soon marks the end of the European Service Module’s mission; it will separate before the crew capsule re-enters Earth’s atmosphere. The European Service Module will burn up in Earth's atmosphere. We supplied the secondary structure for the European Service Module 👉 https://lnkd.in/dYcVaeEc The European Service Module is being developed and manufactured by Airbus Defence and Space on behalf of the European Space Agency - ESA. Our secondary structures were shipped from Zurich to Bremen (Germany) and attached to the primary structure during assembly. These vertical struts support key components such as the solar panel wings themselves, the thrust control systems for the Airbus engines, and the water and gas supply systems. The primary structure was built by Thales Alenia Space in Turin (Italy). The Orion crew capsule with the four astronauts aboard is scheduled to splash down in the Pacific Ocean near San Diego around 2:07 a.m. (Central European Summer Time) tomorrow.     Behind the scenes with SRF - Schweizer Radio und Fernsehen at our site in Zurich Seebach 🎥✨ It was exciting to open the doors to our cleanroom and share how we support NASA’s Artemis II mission – with insights from our colleagues Oliver Grassmann, Josef Zemann, Christian Anderau and Laura‑Jane Gerber. Our teams in Zurich and Nyon supply the Solar Array Drive Mechanisms – including slip rings and twist capsules – that deploy and precisely steer Orion’s four solar wings, keeping them aligned with the Sun and securing a reliable power supply on the journey to the Moon.   • Humans have never gone further into space 🧑🚀 😮 The four NASA astronauts are sitting in the Orion crew capsule, which is powered by the European Service Module. We supplied the solar array drive mechanisms for the European Service Module, which are used to move its four solar wings 👉 https://lnkd.in/dg7e4EDi These mechanisms are designed to enable extremely precise movements, allowing the solar wings to tilt and rotate in order to track the Sun ☀️ Developed in Zurich, Switzerland, they include slip rings and twist capsules from Nyon. The European Service Module was developed and manufactured by Airbus Defence and Space on behalf of the European Space Agency - ESA. It powers Orion and provides the astronauts on board with electricity, propulsion, drinking water, a breathable atmosphere and a comfortable temperature.

    Heading to the Moon 🌑 👨🚀 Four NASA astronauts are on their way to the Moon following a successful manoeuvre on 2 April, in which our mechanisms played an important role. After reaching space, the European Service Module powering the NASA Orion crew capsule deployed its four solar array wings. This allowed the spacecraft to receive energy from the Sun ☀️ Our solar array drive mechanisms enable the four solar wings to precisely tilt and rotate towards the Sun. Our mechanisms are also used to position cameras 📷 for spacecraft inspection. Yesterday's six-minute firing 🔥 of the service module engine propelled the crew capsule out of Earth's orbit and onto the path towards the Moon. This process is known as the 'translunar injection burn'. During lunar orbit insertion, our mechanisms tilt forward to shield the solar cells from the exhaust of Orion’s main engine. 👉 https://lnkd.in/dg7e4EDi The main engine sits on the European Space Agency - ESA European Service Module (ESM). The ESM provides propulsion, power, oxygen, water and life support for the Orion crew module as well as controlling the temperature. The flight path of “Artemis 2” roughly follows a figure-eight trajectory around the Earth and the Moon.     No April fool's trick: Tonight, April 1, NASA aims to send humans near the Moon 🌑 🚀 - for the first time in more than 50 years. Four astronauts 👨🚀 will embark on a 10-day journey, flying around the Moon and back. Our site in Zurich (Switzerland) provided the 2-axis solar array drive mechanisms for the European Service Module that powers the Orion crew capsule. Our mechanisms include slip rings from our Nyon site and are used to supply the Orion crew vehicle with electricity from its solar wings.   Each NASA Orion spacecraft 🛰️ has four solar wings. Therefore, four solar array drive mechanisms are being used from us. The main challenge for our mechanisms is to transfer the electricity from the rotating part (solar array) to the crew vehicle. Another challenge is to orient the solar array under extreme conditions, such as the cold environment. Our slip ring (integrated into our solar array drive mechanisms) is a key mechanism in that context. A slip ring (see image to the right) is an electromechanical device that enables the transmission of power⚡and electrical signals from a stationary structure to a rotating one. Our Nyon site is one of the major suppliers of space slip rings with over 60 years of experience. https://lnkd.in/dqMHrirm The prime contractor for European Space Agency - ESA's European Service Module is Airbus Defence and Space.
