One third of the world’s remaining population of endangered mountain gorillas call the forests of Virunga National Park in the DRC home. Protecting this rich ecosystem takes coordination across partners, data, and on-the-ground action. Alongside the Virunga Alliance and Microsoft's AI for Good Lab, PlanetScope imagery helps detect threats to critical gorilla habitat and monitor deforestation in near real time. Planet Mosaics data, combined with Microsoft AI for Good Lab’s AI-driven analysis, supports smallholder farmers in verifying deforestation-free practices. Traditionally, satellites capture data, wait for a ground station pass, and then send raw files down for processing. We just proved there’s a faster way. As our Pelican-4 passed over Alice Springs, Australia, we used its onboard NVIDIA Jetson Orin modules to detect airplanes, marking one of the first times an Earth observation satellite has moved beyond simple data capture and towards AI-enabled intelligence. This landmark technical achievement builds on our recently-announced strategic initiative with NVIDIA, paving the way for our path to planetary intelligence. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gEzF6Prh

This is AI detection of planes… done in space! Done with NVIDIA Jetson Orin modules on our Pelican spacecraft. The point here is speed: this was done within minutes of image capture – so summary analysis can get to users faster, enabling real time action. It’s part of the shift to planetary intelligence: we’re connecting our satellite’s “eyes” with the AI “brain” 🧠📡 Congrats to the NVIDIA & Planet teams on this milestone! https://lnkd.in/egXjR_w6
