St Maarten / St Martin Geography

St Maarten is located in the northeastern Caribbean. It is close to islands like St Barths, Saba, St Eustatius / Statia, St Kitts & Nevis and Anguilla, all of which you are able to see from St Maarten. The island is separated into the Dutch side Sint Maarten and the French side Saint Martin with an open border in between them. The southern Dutch side is owned by the Kingdom of the Netherlands, while the northern side is officially a part of France.

The island is about 87 square kilometers or 34 square miles in size. It is one of the smallest inhabited islands that are owned by two nations. The island has many hills, which all the roads were built around. The highest hill is Pic Paradis, with a height of 424 meters or 1391 ft. In addition, there are beautiful lagoons and coastal plains. The Simpson Bay Lagoon is one of the Caribbean’s largest inland natural lagoons. St Maarten used to have a lot of salt ponds. One of the largest ponds remaining is the Great Salt Pond in Philipsburg. There are 37 named beaches, all of which have their own characteristics. Some are more calm and silent, while others are busier and full of beach bars.

While the island’s capitals are Philipsburg (Dutch side) and Marigot (French side), there are other major areas like Simpson Bay and Maho in the southern part and Grand Case and Orient Bay in the north. The airport is located in Maho, next to Maho Beach, famous for its low plane fly-overs.

St Maarten / St Martin Traffic

In St Maarten, you drive on the right side of the road. Although the island is small, traffic can get quite busy during rush hours, since there are only a few main roads. Whenever you travel around the island, you can use Google Maps or Waze to schedule your route and plan your departure. In case you are driving yourself, in a rental car for example, don’t be surprised when someone honks at you. Especially on the Dutch side, honking mostly means “thank you” or “go ahead.”

In case you don’t want to drive, you can use the public bus transit or a taxi. If you decide to use the bus, just wave it down if you want to get in from anywhere along its route. When you want to get out, just say “bus stop, please” and the driver will stop. There are very few official bus stops. Keep in mind that official buses on the Dutch side always have a Bus or B license plate.
