Geography

Libya is a country at the Mediterranean coast of North Africa. The land has a total area of 1,759,540 km² (679,362 mi²) and a total coastline of 1,770 km (1,099.8 mi). This land area is approximately 253% of the area of Texas. Libya is thus one of the largest countries in Africa and the 17th biggest in the world. With 4.2 inhabitants per km² it is one of the most sparsely populated countries on earth. An exceptionally high proportion of residents (88%) belongs to the urban population. Around one in six residents lives in Benghazi alone.

Libya is comparatively low at an average elevation of 423 meters above sea level. The highest mountain peak (Bikku Bitti) is at 2,267 meters. The country has 5 islands in the open sea. There are direct national borders with the six neighboring countries Algeria, Chad, Egypt, Niger, Sudan and Tunisia. The distance between New York City and the Capital Tripoli is about 7,490 km (4,654 mi).

Climate in Libya

The climate in Libya is subtropical, so it is much drier and warmer than in the most parts of the US or Central Europe. Only in a few humid months per year is the intensity of rain a bit higher. Depending on the season, the average daytime temperatures range between 19 and 36 degrees. In some parts of the country, the temperature rises to 40 °C. In the colder months, and depending in the region, the temperature drops to 8 °C in a month's average.
