When I try to download the full installer for macOS Monterey 12.7.4 with softwareupdate I get the following error:

softwareupdate --fetch-full-installer --full-installer-version 12.7.4 Scanning for 12.7.4 installer Install failed with error: An internal error occurred

How should I diagnose this problem? I can see the installer is being downloaded at around 30MiB/s for some duration and I get a % status.

The installer is available for download as reported by softwareupdate --list-full-installers:

softwareupdate --list-full-installers (...) * Title: macOS Monterey, Version: 12.7.4, Size: 12117810KiB, Build: 21H1123, Deferred: NO (...)

macOS Monterey 12.7.4 build 21H1123 is still available from the Apple Software Catalog.

Download it from https://swcdn.apple.com/content/downloads/46/57/052-60131-A_KM2RH04C2D/9yzvba1uvpem2wuo95r459qno57qaizwf2/InstallAssistant.pkg

You could try to use Mist – the macOS Installer Super Tool – for downloading: "A Mac utility that automatically downloads macOS Firmwares / Installers".
