I’m using a VPS with Ubuntu 22.04 and XFCE desktop (4 vCPU, 16GB RAM). But it's extremely slow — even when idle, opening a browser or switching tabs takes 10–15 seconds. I tried killing all processes and using htop, but nothing is eating resources. Time inside the VPS also lags.

Is this a system misconfiguration or could it be an issue with the host node? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!

that's something we really can't answer. We don't even know the storage IO rates your provider allows for your virtual machine – which might well be dominating something storage-intense as opening a browser. In the end, this is something you need to discuss with your VPS provider. Note that I'm not very convinced running a browser on a VPS is a great idea – you could instead run the browser locally and just use the VPS as proxy / VPN exit. Commented Jun 15 at 10:44
