How can I add a separate context menu option/entry to start Firefox ESR in a private window, in Debian 12/13 with KDE or XFCE?

KDE Entry:

Normal Window

  • Right-click the start menu icon

  • Select Edit Applications...

  • Add New Submenu

  • Enter a name

  • Select an icon

  • Add a description or comment

  • Select New Item

  • Enter a name like "Firefox Normal" in Name:

  • Enter /usr/lib/firefox-esr/firefox-esr in Program:

Private Window

  • Select New Item

  • Enter a name like "Firefox Private" in Name:

  • Enter /usr/lib/firefox-esr/firefox-esr in Program:

  • Enter --private-window in Command-line Arguments:

  • Save

Now select and start your entry from the start menu.


XFCE Entry:

Option 1 – Two Separate Launchers

Step 1Normal Mode (if you don’t have an entry yet):

  • Right-click the panel and select Add New Item

  • Select Launcher

  • Right-click the new launcher icon in the panel and Select Properties

  • Select and add Firefox

Step 2Private Mode:

  • Right-click the panel and select Add New Item

  • Select Launcher

  • Right-click the new launcher icon in the panel and Select Properties

  • Select and add Firefox

  • Select Edit the currently selected entry

  • Edit/Add a new name

  • Add /usr/lib/firefox-esr/firefox-esr --private-window into Command:

Option 2 – Something Like a Selection Menu

  • Repeat Step 1 from Normal Mode if you don’t already have an entry

  • Select Add one or more existing items to the launcher

  • Select and add Firefox

  • Select Edit the currently selected entry

  • Edit/Add a new name in Name:

  • Add /usr/lib/firefox-esr/firefox-esr --private-window into Command:

  • Close

Now select and start your entry from the panel.
