ftp prompt : is there any command to transfer files from one directory to other in remote only

I don't think it's possible but still I w'd like to ask if there is any command to transfer file from one directory to other in remote machine at ftp prompt. I explain: I did ftp to a remote machine. I am in ftp prompt. I am at /a directory. I want to copy a file from this directory to /a/b directory. I don't think it's possible as ftp means to transfer from one machine to other. But still I w'd like to ask you. If not then is it possible to telnet that machine as ftp is possible? I can ftp a remote machine but then can it be presumed that telnet w'd also work there?

EDIT

As thought, it can't be presumed that telnet w'd also work if ftp does work. I have checked this right now. By mistake I have transferred (via put) to a wrong directory. So,please assist me on how I can shift or move that file to a subdirectory. If no other way, then I need to re-transfer.
