Each PS3 unit has an abbreviation which signifies the origin of a unit's manufacturing plant.

For PAL units, if the first two numbers in the serial number are 08 or 09, it means they had a Sony Refurbishment (regardless of manufacturing plant).
Other known first two serial numbers are: 00, 02, 03, 06, although it is not known what they mean. NTSC (North America) units use a shortened format for serial numbering, although the full serial can be calculated.
