Well, I am finally getting ready to buy a new laptop. My current one is a Macbook G4, running Panther, so it is well behind in hardware and software. I was waiting for Snow Leopard before I took the plunge. It's here, it's been out for a month and the basic bugs should be fixed, so I am going to buy a new laptop. I am springing for a Mac Pro this time - faster, bigger hard drive.

Before I get the new one I have to clean up the data on the old one so I don't transfer too much stuff. I spent 2 hours last night starting to clean out my email on the laptop; there were about 8000 emails, lots from a couple of Pros and Mag7 mailing lists. I really have a hard time letting go of information. I have not re-read those posts but I never cleaned them out either. Some of the Pros posts were interesting to look at again; 2004 and 2005 were big conversation times on Pros-Lit and ProsLanguage. Of course I don't have to save them on my laptop; I can still read the posts on Yahoo. I need to keep telling myself that.

After I get the email cleaned out I will go for the multitudinous web pages I saved. Some I will keep, but a lot have served their purpose and need to yield their space to something new.

I get 30 minutes of free help when I buy the new machine; I am making a list of questions. The big one is how to transfer emails and iTunes data, and my bookmarks. Of course, I really need to clean up and organize the bookmarks too.

C. J. Cherryh has a very scary story on her blog. She nearly lost the new Foreigner novel due to trouble with an ac adapter. Here's a link; it's the October 7 post.

I don't have anything that important to the world on my computers, but this is one more reminder to get some backup in place, and maybe get some new equipment. Everything is about maintenance these days. I want things that work once you get them, and stay where you put them, and last a long time after you pay out money for them, but that is not the digital world.
