I guess it's been a while....

I read A Morbid Taste for Bones by Ellis Peters. I had seen Some of the Brother Cadfael mysteries on PBS years ago, so I gave this a try, despite being  really tired of Christianity in books and media. The start was a little slow, but the characters were good and Cadfael was plesently clever. I'm a little tired of the way women are treated as second class citizens by Western culture as well, but the author treats them well despite the attitude of the era she's writing in. I'm not sure I'll read more of these, but if you like mystery, these might be good.

I read Akata Witch and Akata Witch by Nnedi Okorafor. These were excellent. The protagonist's struggle to be treated as an equal defines large portions of her story, as well as being pushed to be exceptional by adults who are either unable or unwilling to fix major problems. The society she finds herself in is very sink or swim about things, though they do at least provide and prize information. I found Sunny to be very likable and relatable.

We read Tamora Carter, Goblin Queen by Jim C. Hines to our daughter. (Really my husband did the reading.) Jim C. Hines is an excellent author and it was nice to share one of my favorite authors with my family. Things featured include roller derby, goblins, a dragon, elves and a librarian. I really liked this one.

I've started reading the Magic of Recluse by L.E. Modesett Jr. So far I like the horse better than the protagonist, but the ideas are interesting, so i'm going to stick with it for a while. This book was published in the early 90s. So I expected a bit better from the author, but the main character calls the woman most like him a bitch, just because she's too much like him and he doesn't like that. This protagonist is thrown to the wolves with some training, but too few answers to why he was sent walkabout, and many of the people around him who are more in the know aren't letting him in on what's going on. I kinda felt like that a lot as a kid. I relate to him somewhat for that, but his priivlige is tripping him up and he does a little too much evaluating a woman on how pretty she is. I'm sticking with it because I want to see what's going on and if this boy figures out what's going on.  I also kinda have it in for the people who sent him away for not understanding things they wouldn't tell him about, so we'll see if they get theirs.

Also, spellcheck is annoying, because, sure, i spelled the word wrong, but it doesn't tell me how to spell the word right and I don't feel like looking it up. Thanks spellcheck, you're not my friend.

You mean "Akata Witch" and "Akata Warrior"? I've read the first but never got around to reading the second one.
