Mar 17, 2024 at 17:30 comment added ezez I don't have a better answer - I thought I'd simply point this out, in case some people don't know this about this change yet. Personally the only solution I know is to build a system using Attribute Groups and scripting, as Attributes window doesn't have similar nice add/remove + create groups features as Face Maps had to manage face selections. That is what I've done for one project.

If you ever find an outdated answer in this site you can propose an edit with updated information. If you have a better answer that warrants a full post please do publish it below
Mar 17, 2024 at 11:39 comment added ezez This answer is partially outdated - Face Maps (which should not be mixed with Face Sets of Sculpt mode which still exist) have been (for some reason) removed in Blender 4.0. It is mentioned at least here: projects.blender.org/blender/blender/issues/105317
